Millions of people in Myanmar faced hours of power outages after the earthquake, and phone lines remained down in some places. Restoring power will not be easy in Mandalay and major power problems are likely to arise in the coming days.
Airports and control towers in Mandalay and Naypyidaw appeared to be almost completely destroyed, with cracks appearing on highways and bridges along the way. The logistics of transporting rescue teams and supplies to affected areas can be challenging.
The Salvation Army has been serving Myanmar since 1915. The Myanmar Regional Headquarters is located in Yangon, with offices in 5 districts (the affected area is 8 smaller districts in the Central District), and has about 120 Myanmar officers (pastors) and employees. One of the location Yeni Corps, is 300 kilometers away from the epicenter and on the same fault.
The Salvation Army is preparing to dispatch a team to the disaster area this Tuesday (April 1) to assess the actual damage and distribute emergency relief items. Portable generators and other items may be needed later. More extensive recovery service will include damaged churches and service centres, a children's home in Phyu and other affected villages.
Once more information is obtained, it will be released to everyone. Please pray for the people in the affected areas!
